At Rydes Hill Prep, exceptional pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We believe children achieve their very best when they feel happy, secure and truly known.
With class sizes capped at 24, every child is recognised as an individual. Our staff take the time to understand not only each pupil's strengths and interests, but also how they learn, what motivates them and when they may need a little extra encouragement. We pride ourselves on knowing every child - not just by name, but for who they are.
A community built on relationships
Positive relationships are the foundation of school life. Each child is supported by their class teacher, specialist teachers and our wider pastoral team, creating a network of trusted adults who are always there to listen and help.
Our open-door approach extends to both children and parents. Daily conversations, regular communication and close partnerships with families ensure that any concerns, however small, are addressed quickly and with care. From welcoming families on the gate each morning to celebrating successes at the end of the day, we believe that the little moments make the biggest difference.
When additional support is needed, our experienced pastoral team, together with our ELSA provision, ensures that every child receives the guidance and encouragement they need to thrive.
Growing in confidence
The Prep years are a time of tremendous growth. As children mature, our pastoral approach evolves alongside them.
In the early Prep years, we focus on helping every child feel settled, secure and confident within their new environment. As they progress through the school, pupils are encouraged to become increasingly independent, resilient and responsible, preparing them not only for senior school but for life beyond the classroom.
Our Life Skills curriculum plays an important role in this journey, supporting pupils as they grow socially, emotionally and personally. Recognised during our 2024 ISI Inspection, it helps children develop the confidence, understanding and self-awareness needed to navigate an ever-changing world. Inspectors described Rydes Hill as "a harmonious community with pupils treating each other kindly and courteously."
Building character
We believe that character is developed through everyday experiences.
Each week, we celebrate our Five Cs: Curiosity, Collaboration, Creativity, Communication and Courage alongside recognising acts of kindness that make our community such a special place. One message runs throughout the school:
"If you can choose between being right or being kind, always choose kindness."
Children are encouraged to lead as well as learn. Every Year 6 pupil will be given the opportunity to hold a position of responsibility, while Play Leaders, elected by each class every term, give younger pupils a genuine voice in shaping playtimes and school life. Through our House system, pupils also learn the value of teamwork, encouragement and celebrating one another's successes.
A partnership with parents
We know that children flourish when home and school work together.
We value strong partnerships with our families and believe open, honest communication is essential. Parents are always included in conversations about their child's wellbeing and are encouraged to speak with us whenever they have a question or concern. Together, we create an environment where children feel supported, understood and confident to be themselves.
At Rydes Hill Prep, pastoral care is about more than supporting children through the school day. It is about helping every pupil become a kind, confident and resilient young person, ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges of senior school and beyond.
