At Rydes Hill, outstanding pastoral care is central to everything we do. We understand how crucial it is to continually support the wellbeing of our children and staff so they can thrive. We are proud to have built a culture of support, inclusion and kindness. In addition to our interactive and comprehensive life skills sessions, we have additional initiatives to support children who are finding things tough.
Emotional Literacy Support
If we feel that a pupil would benefit from emotional literacy support we will inform their parents that we would like to invite them to come for some sessions. Parents may also speak to their class teacher or a member of the senior leadership team if they would like their child to be considered. Sessions are complimentary and run 1:1.
Special Educational Needs
If a pupil has additional needs in supporting their academic progress, we can offer individual or group teaching assistant support for an extra fee. If we suspect that your child would benefit from extra support or has additional needs, we will speak to you at the earliest opportunity to discuss options. If you have concerns about your child, please speak to their class teacher in the first instance. If required, your child’s class teacher will arrange a conversation with our SENCO.
Meet Cody - Our School Dog
Cody is our much-loved Miniature Poodle and an important member of the Rydes Hill School community. At four years old, Cody is a friendly, gentle and hypoallergenic dog who brings comfort, joy and companionship to children and staff across the school.
Cody began his puppy training as soon as he had completed all of his vaccinations and later continued his training with Danielle Tree at Guildford Dog School. With his excellent manners and calm nature, Cody has become a regular “Employee of the Month” and takes his role at school very seriously.
Cody actually grew up alongside the children at Rydes Hill School. Their love, patience and attention helped shape him into the wonderful dog he is today. He enjoys spending time with pupils throughout the school day and is always happy to join lessons, pastoral sessions and Forest School activities.
Cody plays an important role in supporting children’s wellbeing. Spending time with him can help pupils feel calm, safe and supported. He has helped several children overcome their fears of dogs, practise their speaking and reading skills, and build confidence. On days when things feel a little tough, Cody is always ready with a wagging tail and a reassuring presence to help children feel happier and more settled.
Like any good school dog, Cody also loves to play. His favourite games include finding hidden toys, playing fetch with a ball and searching for treats. He is also quite the gymnast and can perform a very impressive vault!
School dogs like Cody can have a wonderful impact on school life. They can help reduce stress and anxiety, encourage positive social interactions, and support children’s emotional wellbeing. For many pupils, spending time with Cody provides a calm moment in a busy day and helps create a warm, nurturing school environment.
Cody loves coming into school each day and being surrounded by the children who care so much about him. He is a very special member of our school family.
