Rydes Hill is a Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards 2023 Finalist

We are thrilled to have been selected as a finalist in the national Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards 2023 in the ‘Originality in Teaching Music and the Arts’ category. There were over 400 award applications and Rydes Hill has been shortlisted with 4 other schools.

Over the years, Rydes Hill pupils have demonstrated enormous passion, engagement and a huge amount of success in Music, Speech and Drama. Our general teaching staff frequently collaborate with our specialist Performing Arts teachers to demonstrate that music and drama can be for everyone, not just the talented few. The collaborative efforts between our staff means that lessons are brought to life with music being incorporated into geography lessons, IT being brought into drama and costumes into history class. This multi-dimensional approach allows pupils who don’t want to have a central performing role to engage with music and drama from a different angle such as studying the scientific properties of volume and pitch, planning and directing and creating technical aspects such as CGI and animation. This cross-curricular teaching approach also assists pupils to engage with their academic subjects in another way, which ultimately helps to broaden and reinforce their understanding.

The results of this teaching approach help to underpin not only our excellent academic performance but also our pupils achievements in Music, Speech and Drama. We continue to feed into some of the most coveted and highly selective senior schools in the UK such as Guildford High. In addition, over the past 8 years 100% of our pupils who sit the Victoria College Drama Boards achieve a distinction and the overwhelming majority of pupils sitting their Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams also pass with a distinction.

We are extremely proud of our teachers for the tremendous effort they make to ensure that their subjects are accessible but challenging and extremely engaging.
