Preparing for senior school success
The Prep years are an important time of growth and discovery. As children become increasingly independent learners, they develop the academic skills, confidence and character needed to thrive at senior school.
Alongside excellent teaching, we work closely with families to ensure every child is prepared for the next stage of their educational journey. By the end of Year 6, our pupils leave Rydes Hill with strong academic foundations, growing independence and the confidence to embrace ambitious futures.
STEM

At Rydes Hill Prep, STEM learning is about far more than acquiring knowledge. It is about asking questions, solving problems and developing the confidence to explore the world with curiosity and creativity.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are taught through a varied curriculum, with Science, Mathematics, Computing and Design Technology each taught as discrete subjects. As pupils progress through the Prep years, they learn to make connections across these disciplines, applying their knowledge and skills to real-life challenges and practical investigations.
Learning through discovery
Our well-equipped science laboratory provides an inspiring environment where children learn through hands-on investigation. Regular practical experiments encourage pupils to question, predict, test and evaluate, developing scientific thinking alongside a genuine enthusiasm for discovery.
Science learning extends beyond the laboratory. Our school grounds and Forest School programme provide rich opportunities to explore the natural world, reinforcing classroom learning through first-hand experiences. As an Eco-School, sustainability and environmental responsibility are woven throughout school life, helping pupils develop an understanding of the role they can play in caring for the world around them.
Technology with purpose
Technology is thoughtfully integrated into learning, equipping children with the digital skills they will need for the future. With access to both iPads and laptops, pupils learn to use technology confidently, creatively and responsibly.
Our dedicated STEM Hub provides a collaborative space where innovation comes to life. From coding and programming with Micro and robotics to designing and creating with our 3D printer, children are encouraged to think critically, experiment with ideas and embrace new technologies with confidence.
A wider world of opportunity
As part of the Tormead family of schools, our pupils benefit from exciting opportunities beyond the Prep classroom. Specialist Science teachers from Tormead visit Rydes Hill throughout the year to deliver inspiring lessons that deepen understanding, spark curiosity and introduce children to new scientific concepts and ideas.
Learning is further enriched through visiting speakers, local field studies and STEM-focused experiences that connect classroom learning with the wider world, helping pupils see the relevance and possibilities of STEM in everyday life.
Leadership opportunities also play an important role. In Year 6, pupils can become STEM Ambassadors, encouraging younger children, promoting curiosity across the school and developing the confidence, responsibility and communication skills that will support them throughout their education.
